Do You Know about BIE?
The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) is an intergovernmental organisation that oversees and regulates all international exhibitions lasting more than three weeks that are non-commercial in nature, known as “Expos.” Currently, the BIE supports four types of Expos: World Expos, Specialised Expos, Horticultural Expos, and the Triennale Milano.
The BIEโs mission is to ensure the quality and success of these global events, safeguard the interests of organisers and participants, and uphold values of education, innovation, and cooperation. They do this by selecting host countries, offering expertise in event management, national branding, and diplomacy, and by setting regulations to ensure that host countries and participants follow the BIE Convention and Expo guidelines.
The BIE headquarter is located in Paris. Founded in 1928 by 31 countries after the Paris Convention, the BIE has grown to 184 member states, reflecting the popularity and significance of Expos. All member states contribute to BIEโs decision-making and work towards enhancing Expo quality.

World Expo 2020 Dubai
Still can’t get over the mesmerising Expo 2020? Here is a recap of the magnificent, highly impactful World Expo 2020.
Universal Exhibitions
Universal Expos, or World Expos, are large-scale international expos that bring together countries from all over the world to showcase ideas, achievements and innovations. Held every 5 years and lasting up to six months, these Expos cover wide-ranging themes meant to inspire solutions to global challenges. They create a space where countries, organisations, and companies can present their latest advancements in technology, culture, science, and art.
World Expos aim to encourage cultural exchange and foster collaboration among nations, showcasing unique exhibits that are both informative and entertaining for visitors.
Famous structures like the Eiffel Tower and the Seattle Space Needle were originally built for World Expos, leaving a lasting impact on their host cities.
With millions of visitors from around the world, Universal Expos provide an unforgettable experience, celebrating human progress and future possibilities.

Horticultural Exhibitions
Horticultural Expos are specialised international expos that focus on plants, flowers, gardens, and landscape design. Organised to promote green innovations and environmental awareness, these events bring together experts, businesses, and visitors to explore sustainable gardening practices and learn about the latest advancements in horticulture.
Each Horticultural Expo is designed around themes like biodiversity, climate-friendly gardening, and the importance of green spaces in urban life.
These expos display everything from beautiful flower gardens to advanced agricultural techniques, offering visitors an opportunity to appreciate nature and understand its role in a healthier planet.
Horticultural Expos are open to all, providing a vibrant setting for people to connect with nature, discover new ideas, and celebrate the beauty and benefits of plant life.
Specialised Expos
Specialised Expos are international exhibitions with a focus on a specific theme, smaller in scope than World Expos, yet incredibly impactful. These expos, bring together countries, organisations, and companies explore a single topic in depth. Themes often relate to pressing global issues, such as energy, transportation, or sustainable development. Unlike World Expos, which last for up to six months, Specialised Expos typically run for three weeks to three months, making them more focused and time-limited.
One example is Expo 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan, centered on the theme “Future Energy,” which showcased new technologies in renewable energy. These events provide an engaging platform for experts and the public to exchange ideas, inspire change, and collaborate on innovative solutions. Specialised International Expos are valuable for fostering international cooperation and promoting advancements for the betterment of society.
