Milan was chosen by BIE in 2008 to host the World Expo 2015, which had the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.” A team of architects designed the initial plan for the event, which was shared in 2009. The concept was to have two roads, like in ancient Roman cities, with pavilions on how different cultures produce and eat food. A long table was set in the middle of the main road where visitors could taste foods of the various cultures. It all happened under large tent-like structures, symbolizing a global marketplace.

The final plan, devised by Italian architect Stefano Boeri, included greenhouses that show different climates around the world. Countries were given spaces to build their pavilions, and only 30% of the land could be used for buildings. Key features included a large arena, an artificial hill made of excavation materials and an auditorium. The concept mixed environmental ideas with creative structures. The main site was surrounded by a canal, which served as a theater on water.

Logo and Theme of The World Expo 2015

The Expo 2015 Milan logo featured the word “Expo” in a colorful design representing the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.” which highlighted our shared critical challenge: how to feed everyone in a world that is changing so fast. It wasn’t just about food on our plates but the cultural, technological and environmental connections to food. The Expo 2015 examined how to provide healthy and safe food for people everywhere while protecting the traditions and environments that make each country’s food special.

At the event, nations came together to discuss how to tackle issues like hunger, food, waste and climate change. They showed off some new methods to grow food sustainability and talked about what the future might hold. It wasn’t just about showcasing innovations; it was about finding genuine solutions to ensure everyone can eat safe and healthy food now and in the future.

Expo 2015’s mascot was “Foody.” This lively character was inspired by the art of an Italian artist, Giuseppe Arcimboldo. Foody featured eleven foods, like Chicca the pomegranate, and was designed by Disney Italia. With its bright, salad-like appearance, Foody aimed to entertain kids and families in amusing conversations about healthy eating and sustainability. Visitors wanted to interact with Foody, no matter how far he was from the pavilion where they were standing.

During the World Expo 2015, visitors were attracted to its cultural pavilions, where they tasted different foods and participated in exhibitions. The connection between traditional foods and technology created such an environment that visitors couldn’t refrain from buying the tickets and entering the arena.
